Website redesign in progress without losing SEO

A new website should bring more enquiries, not fewer. Yet many redesigns cause traffic to drop sharply because pages that ranked disappear or move without redirects. Follow this checklist and you can redesign with confidence.

Before you start

  1. Export your current URLs. Use Google Search Console, your sitemap and a crawler to list every page.
  2. Find your top pages. Note which pages bring traffic, leads and backlinks. These must be protected.
  3. Benchmark. Record rankings, organic traffic and conversions so you can compare after launch.

During the redesign

  • Keep URLs where possible. If a URL must change, map old to new one by one.
  • Keep or improve content. Do not cut the text that made a page rank. Improve it.
  • Preserve titles and headings on top pages, or improve them deliberately.
  • Plan the structure. One page per service, clear internal links and breadcrumbs.
  • Build on a staging site that search engines cannot index.

On launch day

  1. Add 301 redirects from every old URL that changed.
  2. Remove any no-index setting left over from staging.
  3. Submit the new XML sitemap in Google Search Console.
  4. Check robots.txt, canonical tags and schema markup.
  5. Test forms, WhatsApp buttons and conversion tracking.

After launch

Monitor Search Console daily for two weeks for crawl errors and 404 pages, and fix them quickly. Some ranking movement is normal in the first weeks. With redirects in place and better content, most sites recover and then grow.

Our web development and SEO teams run this process on every redesign.

Frequently asked questions

Will my rankings drop after a redesign?

A small, temporary fluctuation is common. A large drop usually means missing redirects, removed content or a no-index tag, all of which are preventable.

What is a 301 redirect?

A permanent redirect that sends visitors and search engines from an old URL to the new one and passes most ranking signals across.

Should I change my domain during a redesign?

Only if necessary. Changing domain and design at the same time adds risk. If you must, do it with full redirect mapping and Search Console change of address.
